Our main goal is to teach the next generation of environmental stewards with the River Legacy Living Science Center and River Legacy Parks 701 NW Green Oaks Blvd, Arlington, TX 76006. Our environmental education programs are designed to introduce children from as young as three years old to the wonders and importance of nature. We preserve the Trinity River’s unique ecosystem by educating children.

River Legacy Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3). It was established in 1988 as a public/private partnership by the City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department. A group of visionary citizens, Berta Rose Brown and Margaret Rose May saw the potential for a premier park on land given to the city by the Gibbins family. Additional land donations from Perry R. Bass and Texas Industries helped to increase the initial 376 acres.

The Foundation obtained grants and private donations to assist the city in the development of River Legacy Parks. Phase 1 opened in 1990 and features trails, river overlooks, and picnic areas. River Legacy Parks, a 1,300-acre urban oasis that follows the contours of the Trinity River, is now a 1,300-acre urban oasis. Because of its ecological diversity, the Parks have a variety of bottomland forests and wetlands. This provides a habitat for many birds, fish, mammals, and native plants. River Legacy Foundation continues to collaborate with Arlington Parks and Recreation Department in order to provide funding for the preservation and expansion of River Legacy Parks.

The Foundation recognized the need to create an educational facility in order to ensure that future parkland stewards are educated. In 1995, it launched a Nuts About Nature capital crowdfunding campaign to fund the construction of a unique nature center. River Legacy Living Science Center was opened to the public in 1996. It features interactive exhibits, aquariums, and terrariums featuring native animals. There are also environmental education programs, gift shops, and nature trails.
